His is a false argument. He is declaring that marriage is only a religious institution. That is patently false. I think hate speech is punishing people for having the integrity to vote their beliefs. I wouldn't ever punish someone for voting their conscience. Do you see me protesting against all the people who voted against prop8. Holy cow. Is anyone else amazed by how much hate speech is coming out of the mouths of gays? I cannot remember seeing people who supported prop 8 standing on corners and shouting hateful, nasty statements about homosexuals. I haven't seen a temper tantrum like this since I went to Wal-Mart last week. Prop 8 wouldn't have gotten on the ballot if it was discriminatory. It was already cleared by the court to be voted on. This isn't discrimination at all people.
Marriage isn't a "right". If it were a "right" it wouldn't matter if you wanted to practice polygamy or bigamy or marry any of your family members, animals or inanimate objects. Anyone would be able to marry underage children. Everyone would have the "right" to do any of those things.
Legal "rights" under the law are what matter. All legal "rights" are available to any same sex domestic partnership right now, all day, every day in California.
The LDS church did not contribute any money to the Prop 8 campaign. This all boils down to one thing: moral relativism. Either you believe that right and wrong is determined by either a majority or minority consensus, or you believe that the scriptures are true and there are very real rules and consequences. Never the two shall meet. This is going to be a very long and drawn out fight that isn't going to end until the world ends.
