I agree with you in one aspect, that it is up to the American People and it should be that way. But c'mon "In good Christian Families" ? What is wrong with you? We are not a Christian nation, we are a bi-partisan country that embraces personal liberties. What if we outlawed Christianity? It is the same issue. The fact of the matter is it doesn't matter what she actually thinks, this competition is about a positive role model and spokesperson, and Miss California proved in that one answer she cannot positively convey a image that I would want a child to look up to. NOT because she doesn't agree with gay marriage, but because of the fact that it really doesn't matter what she personally thinks, its about the fact that our country is great because of the great strides we take in allowing everyone equal rights, and the fight for gay equality is just another battle that will bring us to being a truly free country. She could have answered that question in a why not setting that still contained the ability of conveying a response in a publicly suitable way.
