The name is unimportant, but the concept is essential! People that want the sanction of the church will go the next step, but legally everything will be the same for all. Those churches that don't believe in it won't do it, and the ones that do will, but either way all will have equal civil rights and protection under the law. I just added the Libertarian and unorthodox church views to show that there are more then two ways to think about the issue. It helps to get people thinking outside the box. (2)
I am not going back. You have misunderstood my posts, which given the format limits of this blog is understandable. My point is this, the concept of marriage is one deeply rooted in religion, of that there is not doubt, so let the religious zealots keep their term. A secular government should not be promoting religious based institutions; therefore, it is time to overhaul the system to reflect a uniform, solely secular process for ALL, in regards to licensure, tax relief, spousal rights etc. The same civil rights for all, and it should not fall uder the term, "marriage" for both heterosexual and homosexual couples. We can call all licenses "civil union" or "commitment licenses". (1)
Since 1837, per English law, the proof of a marriage has been by a marriage certificate, issued at the ceremony; before then, it was by the recording of the marriage in a parish register..... Per the U.S. some groups believe that needing to obtain a marriage license from the State in order to be married is unnecessary or immoral. The Libertarian Party, for instance, believes that all marriages should be civil, not requiring sanction from the State. Some Christian groups also feel that, since marriage is a contract between two people and God, no authorization from the State is required. How am I wrong?
There is a solution. Overturn any marriage regulation on every law book in the USA. Re-establish this institution as a "civil union" and then if you want to get "married" - find a church that'll agree to "marry" you. Get rid of the marriage clerks, marriage licenses, and marriage offices in county and city buidlings, and replace them with civil union clerks, licenses, and offices. Rewrite all the tax laws, etc. that say "marriage: and replace it with "civil union". (3)
