Actually, Jim Henson began his career with entertaining adults in mind, not children. (See his short films from the '60s or his plans for a "rave" type nightclub). It was only after he was approached by the creator's of "Sesame Street" to become involved with the program that he altered his direction for age appropriate audiences. He did try to go back to adult-themed material in the '80s, just with limited success ("Muppets Tonight", for example).
