Just because he signed a contract doesn't mean that the coach didn't have the right to kick him off the team. You have to look at the TERMS of the contract -- a lot of contracts often reserve the right for people to be removed for various reasons, or for no reason at all. And I'm going to guess that Duke University has a pretty competent team of lawyers drafting their contracts.
