The best interest of the children would be to get them out of an abusive household. When role models display aggression, children are really susceptible to learning and mimicking the behavior (as proved empirically in Bandura's Bobo Dolls experiment, and loads of others). So, where disentangling yourself emotionally is hard, and it is a sad thing to make a child say goodbye to their parent, abuse is never okay, and both the partner being abused and the children deserve better.
