I'm sure your Mama will remember this birthday for the rest of her life - and while I disagree with some of the things you say about people, I thought it was sweet how you treated your Mama :) Happy Birthday to Mama!
I met him briefly in Savannah when he was filming a movie and I was surprised at how pleasant he was. Even after a long day of filming in the humid Savannah heat, he took the time to greet people that had watched the filming, sign autographs and more, and all with a smile and a thank you for being a fan. I also had a friend that had met him and his wife (they rented a home there for the duration of the movie) and she got the same impression.
Much different than the impression Keanu Reeves gave off in the same conditions while filming there!
I'm glad I got to talk to him for a few minutes and while sure, he may have been cocky at the young age of 18 or 20, what *kid* wouldn't when put in that situation?
I think she should be ashamed writing a book like that about a young man, one who obviously learned from whatever mistakes he made and became an outstanding *adult* with a good sense of values and the common decency to treat other human beings with respect.
First of all people, Perez asked a question - he didn't make a statement. Expressing disgust at him isn't answering his question, it's supporting your own misinterpretation of a question posed.
Second of all, Perez, please understand that being in the military mixes people from all over the nation, multitudes of backgrounds, religious beliefs, ethics, families, and more in one small community. Don't ask, don't tell in all honesty helps protect gays/lesbians in the military. Because whether it's supported or not, you have racists and homophobes in the military just the same as everywhere else in the nation. Unfortunately, because of that small percentage of people, you have to adopt a wider policy to protect those that would be affected.
Of course there are gays/lesbians in the military. Of course, they've chosen to out themselves to the colleagues they feel they can trust to support them. If an NCO had the ability to ask in front of the entire company whether someone was a homosexual, he would be opening that person up for being prejudiced against, just like in the non-military world. How many gays choose not to be out at work because they know management might not support it? Why should gays in the military be put in the position of being forced out if they choose not to disclose their sexual preference?

That's just my two cents on it.
