Wow, this is just shocking. Propofol is a very dangerous sedative often used for surgery and ICU patients. When it's used, it decreases the respiratory drive, so it's VERY closely monitored and controlled because it will make a person stop breathing. And when your heart doesn't get enough O2, it goes into arrest. You can't fight that stuff, and it's not addicting, so I believe this poor person was genuinely using it to get sleep. Synergized with other drugs may produce hallucinogenic effects.. but who knows. RNs, by law, can't even give it to a patient if there isn't a secure airway.. that's how dangerous and serious this drug is.
Whoever introduced him to this drug knew what it could and would do. That is what's saddest of all... that even though he chose to do it, someone knowingly gave it.
This drug is typically administered by IV because it wears off fast. So someone out there is going to find themselves in a big shit storm soon.. because I'm sure he wasn't administering it himself.
