As a vegetarian, the radical tactics anger me because they push people away and they shine a divisive, negative light on the issue (whatever it may be, in this case, not eating meat). Natalie Portman is not using a radical tactic. I obviously do not believe in eating meat, but I have gone out of my way to respect other people's beliefs and choices. I do not pressure anyone about eating or not eating meat and I still have faced so many attacks on my personal beliefs and decisions on not eating meat that it is unbelievable! People are talking about humans evolving into omnivores, but don't think about the ability to evolve into herbivores. I understand that there are still circumstances that make it harder to be able to make a decision to not eat meat, but it truly has become a decision that an individual can make.
She did NOT compare eating meat to raping someone! What Natalie Portman was saying is some people who would possibly choose a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle feel pressured into eating meat. She uses rape as a comparison in saying that it is a severe social issue and it would be ridiculous if anyone felt peer pressured into saying it is OK. She was saying that people should not drop their values and the way they truly feel just because of how those around them feel. That portion is not even putting down meat eaters. That portion is simply saying stand up for what YOU believe in.
thank you for the following. I really appreciate your answer. I am so sick of hearing how much better private schools are.
"Re: Melissa is always right – I went to Catholic All girls schools from K-12 and I can only say it helped be become the Best lesbian I could be. It means nothing. Good Teachers can be found anywhere not just in Private School. I never had good one's and I'm trying to be the Best Public "Alternative" teacher I can be."
