It was most likely banned for the use of aspartame as an artificial sweetener. Because aspartame is cheap and easy in production it is popular in many sugar free gums and sodas but it is also linked to brain cancer in preliminary studies by the FDA and will probably continue to be in "preliminary studies" because the FDA is not only funded by tax dollars but also by the companies whose products they test.
