I'm pretty sure if the catholics are pissed off...it's a POSITIVE for the rest of the country. And this is coming from someone who was raised roman catholic.

coming from a ridiculously music-centric background, it's definitely an arty song in a way. coming from a record label point of view, this is an incredibly risky song in general. but kanye is one of those artists where his fanbase will buy regardless. plus he's probably got a hell of a lot more pull with his label/contract than most artists out there because of his credibility.
it's a tough sell. the hardest part to digest (outside of the vocal distortion) are the vocals in the chorus. i get what he was going for, but it's rough, for sure.
i love the verve. this song isn't a strong first single by any means, but generally label practice is to put out the really big "money maker" single second. plus anything they do will probably be a disappointment in comparison to bittersweet symphony. so give them a break. i don't hate this song, either.
