I LOVE my Kindle. I can go through a paperback a week, and I have no need to have all those books laying around my house, or filling up my bookshelves. I took it traveling this summer, and it was great not to have to lug 3 or 4 books in my carry-on, and it was much more convenient to read on the plane. I don't miss the feel of reading a real book, either. The screen LOOKS just like a real book, and after about 3 seconds you forget that you're looking at an electronic screen. As for the price, the books are cheap enough that you eventually make up the cost. I got mine as a gift, though, so even better! :) If it's a classic book that I really love, I will read the real thing, but for the books I read as paperbacks, this is much better.
New Line would be idiots not to pay the money, if that's what it takes to make the Hobbit. They will make that money back and then some if that movie is made.
I'm sorry to disagree with you, but you can't change what is or isn't inspiring to somebody. I am inspired by people with disabilities doing everyday things all the time. I can't help that I am, and I'm sorry that it's insulting to them, but I can't change how I feel.
