Do these, if any rights/protections vary by state? Should they? What about children? Alimony? What if a privately owned company with a pension plan does not recognize such a union? Again, am I the only one on the planet who thinks about this stuff?

I'm so SICK of this issue.It is one thing for a state to declare same sex marriage is legal, HOWEVER, in the event a same sex couple divorces, do the same laws apply to them? How is custody determined? Do same sex couples want the same set of laws applied to them? Does that include alimony? Social security? Any pension benefits? Real estate? Inheritance? Transfers of property? Life insurance? Funds for a childs well being? Am I the only person on the planet who thinks about this stuff?
