There hasn't been any lawsuits because gay marriage isn't legal in almost the entire country... how can you sue over something that is illegal? You are telling me you wouldn't feel offended if a church said "We won't marry you because you are gay" and for no other reason than that?
You are right that no chuch is required to marry gays, just like they aren't required to marry straight people. But what if a church says "We won't marry you because you are black?" That is discrimination. If props like 8 pass, then churches who do not support gay marriage will get in legal trouble for discrimation for saying "We won't marry you because you are gay." I'm not saying gays are out to screw over the church... but all it takes is one extremist to ruin it for everyone. Doesn't matter if it's a jihadist, a skin head, a homosexual, Republican, a Democrat, or the guy who likes donuts and thinks everyone else should too.
That's what I am saying, just move on and find another person to do it. But gays and lesbians won't let that happen because everyone in this country is so fast to pull the "poor me" card out and don't care who gets hurt in the process.
You know that's how everyone would want it to work... "The priest won't marry us. Oh well, we'll just find another priest." But you and I both know that won't happen. A couple will feel their "basic rights" are being violated and would try to take care of it legally, which would then infringe on people's religious beliefs.
What Elisabeth says is really quite true... the church will get sued for not performing services for gays and lesbians. The mormom church openly excepts gays and lesbians, but has strict rules about who can and can't marry in the tabernacle. If a prop were to pass allowing gays to marry, but the Mormon's don't let them enter the tabernacle, some gay or lesbian couple would feel discrimated against and cause a rukus for not allowing them the same rights as straight people. I'm all for civil unions - for ANYONE who lives together. Gays, lesbians, and even Joe Schmo down the street who lives with his cousin, Bob. If you are in a stable situation of any kind and share household costs with another person, you should be allowed the same benefits as a married persons... but if you want the same "treatment" as straight couples and will impose on people's religious beliefs to get it... that isn't right. Civil unions - Yes. Marriage - No.
