Kung fu is a term used for Chinese martial arts. Karate is a term used for Japanese martial arts. Within kung fu, there are many different styles (Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Wushu, etc.) and likewise with karate (Shotokan, etc.). It's hard to have much of a conversation about the differences unless you target two specific styles (such as Wing Chun vs. Shotokan).
Perez is right, it makes no sense to have a movie called "Karate Kid" which actually features a kid learning kung fu! :(
