Personally I think they're her kids and she can do whatever the hell she wants with them.
I'm not saying that hitting a child is a good thing considering I strongly dislike and now do not respect my parents at all for choosing to hit me in order to discipline me. But, I guess if she thinks that her child will turn out ok then that's her fault if they're as screwed up as I am in the end :)
